Sobornaya Street Samara, Russia circa 1905
Founded in 1586 as a small wooden fortress, Samara is now the sixth largest city in Russia.  Samara is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia, on the Volga river, the largest waterway in Russia.

In 1935, the city was renamed by Soviet power after Valerian Kuybyshev, a Bolshevik leader.  The historical name was returned to the city in 1991.  During Soviet times, Samara was closed to foreigners.
